With over 40 vintages featuring in our September auction, we explore this famed series from The Macallan.

Highly regarded as the Rolls Royce of malt whiskies, The Macallan, is arguably the most sought after and collectible of Scotch whiskies.

Launched in 2002, the Fine & Rare Collection exemplify the finest of The Macallan's maturing stocks, dating all the way back to 1926. The 1926 vintage is the first release of the collection, containing whisky that has been sleeping for over sixty years and limited to a minute 40 bottles. To set the scene, when this whisky first filled its cask, we would of been in the height of Prohibition in America, the first telephone call was made across the Atlantic between London and New York and the Charleston would of been the latest craze to sweep the roaring twenties. Of the forty bottles, 24 were commissioned for label designs by artists Peter Blake and Valerio Adami (12 a piece), and a further two were sold un-labelled at auction for bespoke label design. This 1926 vintage is the oldest an exceptional rarity and one that is extremely sought-after amongst whisky aficionados.

The Fine & Rare collection currently holds over 50 vintages to date, which are a special selection of their most superior casks identified to be at the peak of their maturation complexity from vintage years 1926 to 1991. Each vintage in the Fine & Rare Collection has been personally selected by The Macallan's master distillers and whisky makers as what they believe epitomise the exacting quality of The Macallan. The Macallan have thoughtfully listed a full vintage timeline of their Fine and Rare Collection including bottle facts, tasting notes and historical events from each vintage.

Each bottle from the Fine & Rare collection is hand bottled at Easter Elchies, at cask-strength without the use of chill-filtration or the addition of caramel. The pleasing range of hues demonstrated across the collection comes naturally from cask aging.

According to The Macallan, once a select few casks have been identified for future release their development is carefully monitored in the hope that after further maturation they may reach a level of complexity deserving of inclusion in the vintage collection.

The Fine & Rare Collection has established itself as one of the most admired and legendary of malt whisky series'. Perfect as a collectable, investment, luxury gift or for celebrating special moments, each vintage which has the accolade to join this prestigious range is worthy of your attention. The 1946 vintage bottling in the series for example received an astounding 94 points on WhiskyFun.com by Angus MacRaild who described it as "poetry from start to finish".

Our upcoming September Auction which will run from 27 September - 7 October will feature the extraordinary opportunity to purchase over 40 vintages from The Macallan's Fine & Rare Collection. Make sure that you are registered and ready to bid.
