Explore one of the world's most luxurious Bourbons, the Double Eagle Very Rare

The Double Eagle has landed. And rather literally, as we’ve been consigned not one, but two of these bourbon beauties this month. It appears as though all good things really do come in pairs.

With Independence Day on the horizon we thought we would share a little bit more about this luxurious bottling from the old time favourite bourbon brand, Eagle Rare.

Eagle-eyed folks might also spot that this is the first time we have welcomed this bottle into our monthly auctions since its launch early last year. In consequence, this is a truly a one(two)-of-a-kind-opportunity.

AT FIRST GLANCE…

The title of this rare bourbon, 'Double Eagle Very Rare' has a dual meaning; at first it represents the fact that the liquid is double the age-statement of the standard 10 year old product and if that wasn’t impressive enough, it also reflects the fact that the decanter features two sculptured glass eagles; one encased on the inside base and one perched atop the bottle to serve as the stopper. In fact, it is an easy assumption to make that the title has three meanings, with ‘Very Rare’ bearing the significance that only 299 of these decanters were produced, making this one of the rarest Eagle Rare releases in the brands history.

The decanter is housed within a luxurious presentation box befitting an object of such magnitude. The box is imprinted with a design reminiscent of eagle feathers, and features sliding doors which trigger spotlights above and below the bottle to spotlight the beautiful crystal decanter in its very own display case as if on exhibition.

The presentation also includes an individually numbered letter of authenticity with each bottle.

IT'S NOT ALL ABOUT APPEARANCES THOUGH...

Representatives of Eagle Rare have said that they spent two years working on the presentation for this liquid. This comes as no surprise as it is no easy feat designing something befitting such exceptional liquid. The aged bourbon encased inside the hand-blown crystal decanter is distilled with Buffalo Trace’s high rye mashbill and bottled at a deliciously sippable 90 proof.

Kris Comstock of Eagle Rare said that they had been “waiting for this whiskey to mature for years. Even after two decades, these barrels are surprisingly balanced. Hints of vanilla, toasted oak and caramel lead to a gracefully aged oaky flavor”

EAGLE RARE AND BUFFALO TRACE…

Eagle Rare is a historic bourbon brand, originally developed by Seagram's in an effort to capitalise on what it felt were the popular marketing motifs used by Wild Turkey. They first debuted in 1975, as one of the last new Bourbon brands before the ‘small-batch Bourbon’ boom. Originally produced at the Four Roses distillery in Lawrenceburg, the label was soon acquired by the Sazerac company in the late 1980s. In 1992, production was moved to what is now Buffalo Trace distillery.

Whether you’re a fan of American whiskey or not, you will have most likely heard of Buffalo Trace (for example, a number of Scotch distilleries source their bourbon casks for maturation from Buffalo Trace). This bourbon behemoth is one of the most historic and longest operating distilleries in the US. Their rich tradition includes hall of fame legends such as E.H. Taylor, Jr., George T. Stagg, Albert B. Blanton, Orville Schupp, and Elmer T. Lee.
